CAPTAIN
AMERICA THE WINTER
SOLDIER… 3.5***
So arrives yet another
Marvel Comics superhero movie and the surprising thing is that it
actually manages to live up to the hype. “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”
is a sequel to the original “Captain America” movie rather a than sequel to the “Avenger’s but if you haven't seen the original there is
a nice rehash with plenty to enjoy even as a stand-alone movie.
Set in the modern day, CA ( Chris Evans is back and better )is now part of a SHIELD covert ops team with his partner being Black Widow ( Scarlett Johansson is also back and even better), all under the helm of Nick Fury ( Samuel Jackson….more and better).. A nice intro sets the scene as a reminder that CA is a ”marvel” of a hero. However, things turn quickly sour with the apparent assassination of Nick Fury leaving CA to save the day and not knowing whom he can trust in SHIELD other than Black Widow. However there is a newcomer to CA’s team, Falco( Anthony Mackie ) who makes for a great addition. And then the bad guys,. HYDRA, have their own super soldier dubbed the Winter Soldier who is seemingly stronger, faster and more bad-ass than CA. Is he ?? See the movie. Robert Redford makes for another more sophisticated Bad guy as the head of HYDRA…he’s the thinking man’s menace.
Action pieces are tight and well-choreographed although it never approaches the spectacle of “Avengers” or “Thor” which for this movie is not a bad thing. And here the stakes are much higher and it is clear from the outset that none of our heros is safe, these are characters who can bleed and die! This is a solid action thriller. The 2 hour plus running time goes fast and the action scenes are nicely interspersed with interesting espionage twists and turns that keep you connected to the movie.

Seeing CA in action is really enjoyable regardless of whether he's taking down people stealth-style in near silence or whether he's taking down huge fighter jets single handedly. He makes it believable that someone can be a one man army!
Black Widow is even more impressive this time around and there is an undeniable chemistry between her and CA which helps to engage the audience. She has quite a few action scenes of her own and Johansson is now clearly far more comfortable in the role than she ever was before.
Of
course there will be a further sequel and you should stay while the credits run to get a preview.
Rated
PG-13 for some violence but ok for the kids.
